Agnes Scott Reports “a Few” Positive Influenza A Cases

Agnes Scott College is beginning to see an increase in influenza cases. During the last two weeks, there have been a few positive influenza A tests among students seen at the Wellness Center and one case reported among the staff. If a person tests positive for influenza A, it is possible for that person to have H1N1, and these are being treated by the college as if they are H1N1.

What can you do if you feel ill?

  • Buy a thermometer and check your temperature if you feel you have a fever.

  • Go to the Wellness Center for evaluation and treatment.

  • If you live nearby, go home to recover. The staff from the Wellness Center and the Office of Residence Life will work together to help both the ill student and the roommate.

  • Find a “flu buddy” to help you if you become ill. Your “flu buddy” will bring you food and fluids when you self isolate.

  • Have extra fluids and snacks on hand.

  • Students with influenza should not go to class. The professors will work with ill students to complete appropriate assignments, tests, etc.

  • The CDC recommends that individuals with influenza self-isolate until they have no fever for 24 hours after being off all fever reducing medication.

To stay healthy, you can:

  • Stay informed. The CDC Web site, which can be accessed through the links on this page, is updated regularly.

  • Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing by infected people. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective when soap and water are not available.

  • Agnes Scott has provided antibacterial cleansing wipes in classrooms and labs so that students may clean desks and equipment between uses—use them!

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

  • Take everyday actions to stay healthy—get enough sleep, eat healthy foods, stay away from those who are ill.
