IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE DEANS: Absences and Procedures with Respect to H1N1

To: Agnes Scott College Community

From: Donna Lee, Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students; Rosemary Lévy Zumwalt, Vice President for Academic Affairs & Dean of the College

Re: Absences and Procedures with Respect to H1N1

The following statement pertains to those students experiencing flu-like illness:

• Students with flu-like illness (muscle aches, sore throat, cough, or fever above 100 degrees F) should not go to classes, work study, club meetings, the dining hall, or campus activities. The staff of the Wellness Center and of Residence Life will have thermometers available for students.

• The staff of the Wellness Center is available to evaluate and treat students’ illnesses. Documentation for illness from the Wellness Center is not necessary and will not be provided. Students are expected to act according to the Honor System when reporting flu-like illness.

• Students with flu-like illness should limit interactions with other people (this is called “self-isolation”), except to seek medical care. They should stay away from others during this time period even if they are taking antiviral drugs for treatment of the flu.

• After the temperature has been lower than 100 degrees F for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication, such as Tylenol or Advil, students may resume normal activity and return to classes.

• Students are expected to act in accordance with the honor system in reporting their flu-like illness as a reason for missing classes.

• Students should notify their instructors by email if they are experiencing flu-like illness. For the health of our college community, professors do not want students to attend classes if they are experiencing the flu-like symptoms as listed above. Students should be in touch with their professors via email and should access their Moodle class materials in order to stay current on assignments if possible during their illness.

• Students with flu-like illness who reside on campus and whose family lives relatively close to campus should, if possible, return to their homes to facilitate recovery and self-isolation.

• Students who must remain in the residence halls should contact the residence life staff for assistance with the following: to have their meals delivered to their rooms, to communicate with the Wellness Center, and to obtain other help as needed.
